In the words of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, "a single courageous State may, if its citizens choose, serve as a laboratory; and try novel social and economic experiments without risk to the rest of the country.” The same can be said of a courageous local community.

Declaring Rights of Shutesbury Wetlands

Local projects underway include plans for public education forums and Rights of Wetlands legislative initiatives.

Our working group is based on two basic principles:

1. Any meaningful change must be grounded in principles of democracy and the right to self-governance at the local level. 

2. Any efforts to establish the Rights of Wetlands, or the rights of the people to protect them, must include the rights of Indigenous communities to advocate for the Rights of Wetlands.
